March 21 is the World Forest Day, and the theme of this year is “Forest Recovery: The Road to Recovery and Well-being”.
How important are forest to us?
1. There are nearly 4 billion hectares of forests in the world, and about a quarter of the world’s population depends on them for their livelihood.
2. One quarter of the global increase in greening comes from China, and China’s plantation area is 79,542,800 hectares, which plays a significant role in forest carbon sequestration.
3.The forest coverage rate in China has increased from 12% in the early 1980s to 23.04% at present.
4. The per capita park and green area in Chinese cities has increased from 3.45 square meters to 14.8 square meters, and the overall urban and rural living environment has changed from yellow to green and from green to beautiful.
5. During the 13th Five-Year Plan period, China has formed three pillar industries, economic forestry, wood and bamboo processing, and eco-tourism, with an annual output value of more than one trillion yuan.
6. Forestry and grasslands departments across the country recruited 1.102 million ecological forest rangers from registered poor people, lifting more than 3 million people out of poverty and increasing their incomes.
7. In the past 20 years, the vegetation conditions in major dust source areas in China have been improving continuously. The forest coverage rate in the Beijing-Tianjin sandstorm source control project area has increased from 10.59% to 18.67%, and the comprehensive vegetation coverage has increased from 39.8% to 45.5%.
